I'm somewhat surprised at the response I'm getting from Take Two. It's not like I'm a particularly popular or well know artist on DA, but somehow these comic pages are getting a somewhat higher number of views than average, and it seems every day I pick up another watcher who faves these pages.
Anyway, here are some manga on similar themes and my thoughts: (yes, the list is updated)
My Barbaric Girlfriend (Your & My Secret)
This is the one that inspired me to actually do something. I doubt you'd pick it as the inspiration as there is very little story similarity.
Pretty Face
[link]This one is pretty good and has some interesting similarities to what I'm doing, though I only just discovered it after I started Take Two. Brings to mind the "everything's been done before" statement.
Charisma Doll
[link]Another good one. Very Shoujo. Relatively quiet, but I liked it. Why is it I seem to like Shoujo manga the most?
Kashimashi ~ Girl Meets Girl
[link]It starts a little disjointed, but it does become quite emotionally charged. The story is ongoing, and I'll be eargerly waiting the next episode.
Akane-chan Overdrive
[link]What a load of garbage! Probably best described as an excercise in recursion.
Ranma 1/2. Of course every body knows about Ranma 1/2. I thought the first few stories were pretty good. I was a big Takahasi fan back then. As the story progressed, it got stupider and stupider to the point I now avoid all Takahasi work. The Mermaids series she did was and always will be the best work she did, along with Fire-tripper.
Other Stuff:
Saikano or
She, the Ultimate Weapon. I'm waiting on the manga, but already have the anime. Good, very intense. If you get the DVDs, make sure you get the side story too. If you like the sort of stuff I draw, you will probably like this. Be warned - there are episodes that make you cry. One in particular will rip your heart out.
Steel Angel Kurumi. DVD series.
It seems to be "homeless" with a M 15+ rating and art that keeps dropping into a cutesy chibi style. I've not seen it all, and that won't change. It's another one that will make you cry, but this time it will be for the money you lost buying it.
Solty Rei. DVD series.
Post disaster. Cyborgs all over the place. Lots of action. Art deco design, and obviouly 3D computer generated cars and mecha. A bit silly at times, but after watching the first DVD, I immediately ordered the remainder of the series.
Lain. DVD series.
Weird but intriguing. I thought it was worth the purchase price.
Elfen Lied. DVD series.
Very violent, with brutal themes. The nudity doesn't even rate a mention on the warning labels. Compared to what else was going on, it's comparatively insignificant! When I bought this series, I watched it for three days straight. As soon as it was over, I'd start again. The plot is somewhat simplified from the manga, but it holds together well. And for those who have watched the series and can't work it out, it's Nyuu. Don't worry - until you watch the series the answer is totally meaningless - it won't spoil your viewing pleasure.
Yeah, some of this stuff has been around for a while. I'm just a little slow in picking it up.
