I find it interesting how some some artists put their characters through hrrible events for the sake of amusement, regardless of them being fictional.

It's a sad fact of fiction. If there isn't a tragedy or a problem to overcome, there isn't a story. Fundamentally, it should be looked at as a story of human resilliance - that people (some of them at least) have the ability and guts to climb out of some very deep "holes".
